I have recorded lectures from the same location with and without the headphones in a room with 80+ students. With the headphones the sound volume is approximately double with a lot of the ambient noise such as A/C, fans, those two annoying girls behind me whining is greatly reduced to a point where it is nearly eliminated from the recording. It also eliminated the guy next to me asking me questions(I could hear my responses, but not his questions). It did not eliminate the comments from the lady right in front of me. However, I really appreciate not having to listen to those girls again while reviewing.
I run the cord up my right arm and over my right shoulder (I am right handed) and let them dangle on my chest. To ensure directional benefit, I hang one on either side of my neck. There is a slider that can be adjusted to hang in a clear spot. I have noticed no noise from clothing interference.
Overall I am impressed with the improved quality of my recordings, they are easy to use and really improve the usability of my notes, which is why I purchased the Echo.

If you're planning to use your Livescribe to take notes and record audio at the same time, you need these. Otherwise with the built-in microphone being so close to the nib of your pen, half the audio will have the sound of your pen going "scritch scritch scritch" -- and I am very light on mine!

I purchased this a few months ago after thinking to myself, they should really make an external microphone for this pen. Well I didn't know that these ear buds had a mic built in, which is awesome, until I had read another review. The biggest problem I was having with my smart pen was when I would play back my notes from lecture. I am heavy handed, and no matter how I held the pen, all I could hear was the tapping and/or scratching of the pen against the paper, which made listening to my notes extremely painful!! I couldn't focus because the noise was sooo loud over my teachers lecture. I just about gave up on using the recording feature on my smart pen which just made it an expensive pen until I came across these and read another review.
I would definitely recommend that you purchase this for a better experience. It would be great if they just include this with the pen because they got to admit that the built in mic on the pen picks up too much of the writing (scratching of pen against the paper & tapping of ink cartridge against paper). But, anyways, I dished out the extra cash on Amazon because of the fast shipping I get w/ Amazon prime.
The cord is fairly long and doesn't interfere with writing. I plug these ear buds into my pen and just lay them across my desk or hang them over my neck to record while taking my notes. This solved my problems because it eliminated the scratching & tapping noise. It helped actually capture the lecture better w/ no static or background noise. The mics are built in on both the left and right ear buds. It also came w/ 3 sets of rubber fittings to choose from and put over the ear buds for a better fit. They are comfortable. In my opinion the sound is good when playing back your notes/recording. I can listen to my notes before class without annoying everyone in the hall w/ the playback. My main purpose in purchasing these was the built in mics to fix the problems w/ the annoying noise from writing, so I don't use them for anything but that. The ear buds are small enough to not be so obvious when you have them in because I worried my teacher would think I was listening to music and not her! :) It's worth the money in my opinion just because they have a built in mic on each ear bud.
Update: Ok, after about 2 months of normal use my right earbud is jacked up :( I would take off 1 star for this, but it still works, and is a MUST! I wish they were a bit more durable, but in all fairness, pulling them in and out of my pen case daily was probably the major cause. However, it still works :) The problem I had was on the right earbud, the little cap/microphone piece kept popping up exposing the wires, so I would just pop it back in, but up until last week, it no longer sits where its suppose to, so now the little mic piece dangles from the ear bud by the wires. I just ordered a second pair since the price is far cheaper than the 1st pair I bought and what oher stores are charging. I will keep the new ones on stand by until the mic on the right ear bud gives way! :) So, be advised to be careful how you handle these because you can pop off the mic piece like I did, just take some precaution in how you store them. I will no longer put them in the little elastic pouch for the pen case I bought for the pen.

Since the new echo smartpen does not come with earphones, I ordered these with my pen.
The earbuds do not sit very comfortably in the ear, but for the price they are ok, and the sound is acceptable. However, to use them as a means of recording while listening to, say, a lecture is a waste of time.
They are designed to cancel out all outside sound, which they do well, but this is no use at all for recording live. You need to be able to hear what is going on while recording. So the only way you can really use these for recording live, is to hang them around your neck, or put them in a place where they pick up the recording better.
Quite honestly, if you need a good pair of earphones, just buy a set that you like, since the echo pen now takes a standard connection. And if you need to do recordings, just use the microphone that is in the pen. Buy these only if you really need to do stereo recordings with them.

These are perfect to help you review meetings and save time. I take my echo into the meeting, plug in the ear buds and then lay them on the table in front of my note book. Through the meeting I take notes as I would have prior to having the pen, but now when I am reviewing the notes if I cant quite remember what was said I can quickly play the audio from that time and with the 3D earbuds plugged in I can remember who said what from the direction of the audio. I can play back the audio on my laptop with the earbuds and the directionality and quality of the audio is perfect for my needs. Only note is make sure you place the left bud on the left and the right on the right otherwise it confuses your senses.
