 Good New User Overview / Introduction to SharePointJul 08, 2010

I am writing this review because this book deserves more than a "1 star" rating that another e-version reader provided. I have the hardcopy/print version which includes plenty of screen shots. The book is written for those unfamiliar with SharePoint. However, even as a 20+ year IT veteran, with extensive SharePoint experience, I found the book to be useful as both a refresher for features I haven't used very much and as a intro to "what's new" in 2010.
I give the book 4, rather than 5, stars simply due to its intro-level coverage of SharePoint features. This is NOT a book for troubleshooting issues. It IS a book for anyone new to the SharePoint platform who is looking for some basic "how to" information and for gaining a solid, easy to read, understanding of how and why to use most SharePoint 2010 features.

I am just entering the world of SharePoint, never having been asked to use it before. I found this book to be extremely useful. I don't know why anyone with 20 years of IT experience would buy a book entitled "SharePoint 2010 for Dummies". But as an actual "dummy", this book was great. It covers all of the basics of the SP user interface and feature set, including step by step instructions, and lots of great screen shots. Some of the later chapters related to enterprise search and BI weren't very useful to me, but I could see that they would be useful to the right audience. I had struggled with Microsoft's web site and video's, none of which told me what I wanted to know - which was "what is SharePoint", and "how do I use it?" This book covered both topics, and far more effectively than anything else I have found.
If you are a techie looking for architectural details, this isn't the book for you. If you are a Box user being asked to use SharePoint instead - this is the perfect intro.

I haven't fully read the entire book ;) (not that I intend to) but it appears to be a decent resource when I hit spots on Sharepoint that need further explanation. One thing that has been tough (as a dummy) is that the book does assume you know some things that I don't...Maybe I need a dummy-er book first!

I utilize this book for professional training workshops on SharePoint 2010. As of October 15th, 2010, this is the best reference for SharePoint 2010 that I've found. For SP2007/WSS 3.0, we used Microsoft's WSS 3.0 Step-by-Step guide, and will probably start using the 2010 version when it comes out next year.
This reference book is informative and adequate for a site-collection owner to maintain their SharePoint environment, but it is not a great introduction to SharePoint 2010. The main fault of this book is the order of the content, and the lack of in-depth content. For example, the explanation of the Ribbon is totally inadequate and spread through multiple chapters. In this book, Chapter 11 is the chapter on Navigation, compared to Microsoft's WSS 3.0 book where Navigation is immediately after the introduction. In my professional experience, navigation and the ribbon are the two most difficult barriers for the average end-user to overcome - if this book were a guide, those topics would be addressed first, but this is a reference book.
If you are tired of bothering your superiors and administrators with SharePoint questions, this book will help you.
This book is less useful for SharePoint designers and administrators, there are specialty guides on those particular topics.

I purchased this book when Sharepoint 2010 was released for consumers. It was one of only a few books that were available. Because everything was so new, I read a review of this same book for Sharepoint 2007. Those reviews stated that it was written for administrators and several people gave it bad reviews because of it. So, I figured, the 2010 book should be written for the same audience. That was a wrong assumption. My guess is that they changed the intended audience based on the 2007 negative reviews. Oh well. I gave the book 2 stars for not making it clear before I ordered the book that this was not for administrators or people that want to configure Sharepoint 2010. Furthermore, when I recently searched this site for "Sharepoint administration", this book came up again. The comment section screen also shows "sharepoint administration" in the tag suggestions. This book is not intended for administrators. It is a book for users.
